Tomahawk, the supergroup quartet featuring Faith No More’s Mike Patton, Helmet/Battles drummer John Stanier, bassist Trevor Dunn and Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison, will embark on its first tour since 2013 this summer. Starting July 18 in Nashville, the group will be joined on the A Huge Waste of Your Time and Money outing by Ipecac labelmates Melvins, with whom it previously toured in 2003.
Tomahawk emerged in 2001 with its self-titled debut and was active on and off in the studio and onstage through 2014. A new album, Tonic Immobility, was released in 2021 but was not supported on tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In the spirit of the Olympics, Team Tomahawk has decided to rise up and go for the gold once again,” Denison says. “Also competing will be our cohorts the Melvins.” Adds Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne, whose band will be a four-piece on this run with Dale Crover, Redd Kross’ Steven McDonald and Coady Willis, “this tour is a no-brainer. I can’t wait. A Melvins/Tomahawk trek will be a stone groove.”
Tickets go on sale Friday (Feb. 27).
Speaking to SPIN following the release of 2013’s Oddfellows, Patton admitted it took him some time to adapt to Stanier’s punishing drumming style. “He’s hearing this stuff almost as mathematics and I don’t think that way,” he said. “He’s like a fucking robot — it’s amazing. Then I thought about it like, ‘this guy is the backbone of Tomahawk right here.’ And the backbone has to be straight. I’m used to a curved spine. It’s really refreshing.”
