** Rancid, Pennywise, Lagwagon, GBH, the Bronx and FEAR are among the acolytes contributing covers to the album Killed by Deaf – A Punk Tribute to Motörhead, which will be released Oct. 31 through BMG Recordings. The first single is a previously unreleased 2002 collaboration between Motörhead and the Damned on the latter’s “Neat Neat Neat” and can be sampled below. “The punks loved us. The only reason we weren’t in that lot was because we had long hair, so obviously we must be heavy metal,” late Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister once said. “That was the thinking. But a lot of kids heard us without seeing a picture, so they thought we were a punk band.”

** * Chicago instrumental titans Tortoise will return on Oct. 24 with Touch, their first new album since 2016’s The Catastrophist and their debut for International Anthem/Nonesuch after more than 30 years on hometown indie label Thrill Jockey. Lead track “Layered Presence” is out now in tandem with a video directed by Mikel Patrick Avery. The group begins a short tour Oct. 18 at the Broad in Los Angeles and will also play a special Nov. 11 show with the Chicago Philharmonic at the city’s the Auditorium. At the latter, Tortoise will debut material from Touch while backed by a live orchestra for the first time. This spring, the group released the new single “Oganesson” and a subsequent remix EP with contributions from Broken Social SceneSaul WilliamsMakaya McCraven and Heba Kadry.

** Indie duo Whitney returns today (Sept. 10) with a new single, “Back to the Wind,” which will be included on their upcoming AWAL release, Small Talk (Nov. 11). The project also features the Madison Cunningham duet “Evangeline.” Group members Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek will hit the road in support of Small Talk next year, beginning March 7 in Seattle. Whitney will also open for Caamp on Sept. 13 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and will appear Nov. 2 at Chicago’s Empty Bottle for the storied venue’s 33 and 1/3rd birthday celebration.
