Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds was driving between 63 and 68 MPH on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle in a 35 MPH zone when he was killed in an accident last month in Atlanta, according to a report from local police. The musician, who was 51, died hours later from blunt force injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Hinds collided with a BMW SUV driven by a 22-year-old woman who was turning at an intersection. Initial reports indicated she may have driven through a red light, but video footage confirmed the signal was green and that Hinds was at fault in the accident.

Mastodon, which parted ways acrimoniously with co-founder Hinds in March, has since paid tribute to him onstage in Alaska. “We will continue to play Brent’s beautiful, beautiful music that he helped us make,” drummer Brann Dailor said. “We formed this band together and traveled the world together, slept in a van together, laid our heads down on beds of fuckin’ kitty litter, got way too drunk to remember anything the next day about a thousand million times over and over again. The love that we shared and the beauty, all the audiences that we played for, all the stages we stepped on. We’re just at a loss for words. We’re absolutely devastated and crushed to lose him and to be able to never have him back again.”

Mastodon’s only remaining shows of the year will take place Sept. 26 at the Levitation festival in Austin and Nov. 15 in New Orleans as part of a loaded bill also featuring the reunited Acid Bath and Power Trip.

Meanwhile, Hinds’ family is planning a Celebration of Life event “at a later date.”
