Olivia Rodrigo kicked off her first-ever tour last night after a year of buzz surrounding her debut album Sour. The alternative pop singer just won Best New Artist at the Grammys on Sunday and was hiding the high as she kicked off her tour at Portland’s Theater Of The Clouds. During the performance, as an homage to the greats of alternative pop before her, she performed covers of “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne and “Seether” by Veruca Salt.
Veruca Salt responded on Twitter, tweeting out a video of the performance taken by a fan. The band said the cover made their day and showed their support for her music, writing that they have been belting Rodrigo’s songs in the car all year.
We’ve been belting out #brutal and #good4u in the car nonstop for the past year. This made our day, @oliviarodrigo 💕🧡💛 #seether #OliviaRodrigo #verucasalt #sourtour #SOURTourPortland pic.twitter.com/dtj7s1xEB7

For Rodrigo, the significance of songs in paving the way for her own music can’t be understated. Although she was born a year after “Complicated” topped the charts, the influence from the alternative pop scene (especially from these artists) in the 90s and early 2000s goes without question in her own music.
A fan also captured a video of the “Complicated” performance, available to view below.
