Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/producer S-X has made his name collaborating with such heavy-hitters as Lil Wayne, Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper and J. Cole. This year, the 29-year-old’s long-awaited, soon-to-be-released debut album Who We Are showcases the artist’s signature lyrical prowess paired with a unique pop-R&B sound. “I’d say it’s relaxing, chill and honest,” the artist says. “But also energetic at times. I’ve never been able to describe my sound — it’s just S-X music.”
The so-called Wolverhampton Wonderkid took a step back from the industry in 2015 to slow down, start a family, and think about his next move. “I got to know myself more,” he says. “I was experiencing things with my mental health and I really had to just stop music for a while. I got a normal job. It was humbling, but also put so much into perspective for me. Which lead me to do something I’d always wanted to truly do, which is be an artist. And here I am now.”
At the time of this interview, the new album was in its final stages of development. “I’ve become super self-critical with my music and taking much more care with my writing and production,” he tells me. “Whereas before with my mixtapes, I didn’t really think about what I was writing always… I was just getting words out. But now I am focusing on changing that. I’m always learning as I go along.”
The debut single, “All Night (feat. Trippie Redd),” was written back in 2019 with Rico Love in Miami. “We knew it was special so just had to wait for the album,” he says. “And I’d say definitely expect more collaborations on the album!”
Here’s a day in the life of S-X.
