Ahead of a fall North American tour, bass virtuoso Thundercat is back with his first new music since 2023 in the form of “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time” and the Remi Wolf collaboration “Children of the Baked Potato.” Both were produced by Greg Kurstin and are out now through Brainfeeder.
“Children of the Baked Potato” is named after the storied, starch-serving Los Angeles jazz club, which played a formative role in shaping Thundercat’s music when he was younger. The song premiered today (Sept. 15) on Shubuya TV’s gigantic outdoor screen in Tokyo’s Central District and on 42 additional screens in the Miyashita Park neighborhood.
“[Remi] is a child of the Baked Potato like me,” Thundercat says. “She knew exactly what the song needed. And it was wild to watch her make it happen. The more I listen to the song, it’s clear there was no one better I could have picked.”
Thundercat’s last new album, It Is What It Is, was his first to dent the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 when it debuted at No. 38 in 2020. He’s since appeared on tracks with Silk Sonic, Tame Impala, Justice, Kaytranada, Gorillaz and DOMI and JD BECK.
He’ll return to the road Oct. 15 in Atlanta and will also visit the III Points festival in Miami two days later and Tyler, the Creator’s annual Camp Flog Gnaw at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium on Nov. 16.
