Lady Gaga has unveiled her new song “Hold My Hand,” which runs over the end credits to Tom Cruise’s long-in-the-works Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Gaga co-produced the soaring power ballad with BloodPop, while Benjamin Rice contributed additional production.

“When I wrote this song for Top Gun: Maverick, I didn’t even realize the multiple layers it spanned across the film’s heart, my own psyche and the nature of the world we’ve been living in,” Gaga wrote on Instagram. “I’ve been working on it for years, perfecting it, trying to make it ours. I wanted to make music into a song where we share our deep need to both be understood and try to understand each other – a longing to be close when we feel so far away and an ability to celebrate life’s heroes.”
She added that it has been “a beautiful experience” working with Cruise, the film’s score composer Hans Zimmer and director Joseph Kosinski. “This song is a love letter to the world during and after a very hard time,” she wrote. “I’ve wanted you to hear it for so long.”
Gaga is of course no stranger to contributing music to high-profile films. She won a 2019 Oscar for Best Original Song for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, for which she was also nominated for best actress. She also received multiple acting nominations for her role in last year’s House of Gucci. As previously reported, Gaga will embark on her oft-rescheduled Chromatica Ball summer stadium tour July 17 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Top Gun: Maverick arrives May 27 from Paramount and finds Cruise reprising his original 1986 role as fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. It also stars Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly and Miles Teller.
