Simon Gallup says he is back playing bass with The Cure.
At first, his recent re-joining was seemingly confirmed. Back in August, Gallup wrote on his personal Facebook “with a slightly heavy heart I am no longer a member of the Cure!” In a recent social media post (as first reported by NME), Gallup responded to a fan’s tweet asking “Is Simon still a member of The Cure?,” with a simple “Yes I am.”
SIMON GALLUP is…
BACK IN / STILL A MEMBER OF THE CURE!

SPIN reached out to The Cure’s representatives for further clarification, and if Gallup is, indeed, back in the band.
Gallup initially joined The Cure in in 1979 following his contribution to Robert Smith’s side-project Cult Hero, and then left in 1982 during the Pornography tour for two years. After rejoining in 1984, and a brief leave in 1992 due to his hospitalization with pleurisy, Gallup stands as The Cure’s second longest-serving member after Smith.
In 2018 The Irish Times reported that Smith said if Gallup were to leave the band, “it wouldn’t be called The Cure.” He also told The Sunday Times this summer that he believes The Cure’s next record might be their last: “I can’t think we’ll ever do anything else. I definitely can’t do this again.”
Yet, in SPIN‘s 1989 The Cure feature, Smith said, “No, come to think of it, I don’t think the Cure will end, but I can make up an ending if you want me to.” We will just have to sit back and wait to see which ending The Cure will choose.
